Our doctors can play a large role in our healing and it is important to find a gastroenterologist that you have confidence in and can trust. I have seen many doctors since my diagnosis in 2002. Each doctor was a unique experience. Some were good and some were bad but through each of them I learned a little something about myself and this disease to get me where I am today. Here are things that I found I needed from my gastroenterologist.
An Open Mind and Partnership
Having a doctor with an open mind is key for me. This goes for all doctors, not just gastroenterologist. If your doctor has an open mind they will listen and converse with you to try to understand how you are feeling and what you want your treatment to look like. Your relationship with your doctor should be a partnership not a dictatorship. They are there to help you heal and feel better using methods that you are both comfortable with pursing.
Current
I like a doctor that stays current with the latest trends when it come to treament and research about IBD. I have been shocked to find that some doctors don't keep up to date with latest develops in Inflametory Bowel Disease. There is a lot research being done in regards to Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's and it is important to go to a provider that has the latest information regarding these diseases.
Unhurried
I feel like some doctors just see you as another patient they have to get through and that they need to keep people moving quickly to make sure they get through all of their patients in a reasonable amount of time. I understand that doctor's have a lot on their plates and have busy schedules. As a paying patient though, I do not want to be rushed through my visit. I want them to take the time find out about my symptoms and health as well as allow me to ask questions I may have. A good doctor will not rush you through your visit.
In Summary, it is important for you have to be an advocate for yourself when it comes to your health and wellbeing. If you are not happy with your current doctor, change doctors. I went through several before I finally found one that was a fit for me. Your health is so important so don't settle if you are not completely satisficed with your health care providers.
One last note - due to Covid, we now live in a country where telehealth has become more common. You can now see a doctor "remotely" from your own home. I was able to be seen by the Mayo Clinic recently, using Zoom! This opens you to more doctors and resources around the county, not just within your city or town. Take advantage of this and look at broadening your search for a gastroenterologist if you are not happy with your current gastro.
