What is a grain?

Grains can wreak havoc on your gut. Grains are very high in carbohydrates and cause unhealthy gut bacteria to grow and flourish in our intestines.


In general, the following foods are considered grains. There are additional "grains" that are off limits for those of us with Irritable Bowel Disease that I will list as well.

Grains:

Additional Grains that are not permitted for those that have IBD:

Buckwheat

Flax Seed

Barley

Chia Seed

Corn

Chickpeas

Quinoa

Tapioca

Rye

Cassava

Oats

Potato (most root vegtables)

Rice

Millet

Wheat

Spelt


The following foods should be avoided because they contain a form of grain that is not tolerable for those with IDB. This is not a complete list but covers most of the common items that are used by most daily.

  • Cereal

  • Bread

  • Pastries

  • Oatmeal

  • Pasta

  • Hummus

  • Tortillas

  • Tortilla Chips

  • Potato Chips

  • Most Chips

  • Most Crackers

  • Rice, Rice Cakes, Rice Crackers
