What!? A parasite!?

When I first heard someone tell me that I may have a parasite I thought they were nuts! When I thought of parasite I thought of a tape worm or some odd creature living inside me that I would surely know about because a doctor would have told me this by now. Well . . . after learning more about parasites, it turns out they are more common than you think.

Parasites can be found in many places including soils, foods we eat, fecal matter, and in the air we breathe. They can be extremely hard to avoid because they easily transfer from one object or person to another in locations such as the grocery store, daycares, sporting events, and even household pets. I will covering one of the most common types of parasites in this post, Protozoa.

What is a Protozoa?

A Protozoa is a common type of parasite that can exist in humans and can cause illness and disease. There are several types of Protozoa parasites which can cause eye diseases, malaria, and gastrointestinal diseases including, Irritable Bowel Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Many of the symptoms associated with Ulcerative Colitis, such as diarrhea, blood/mucus in the stool, and abdominal cramping are similar to those associated with protozoan diseases such as Amoebiasis, Giardiasis, Cryptosporidiosis, and Dysentery.

Protozoa and the Moon

If you think you may have a Protozoa Parasite, pay attention to your symptoms and how you feel in relation to the moon phases. Parasites are more active during a full moon and become less active around the new moon phase. Hence you may experience worsened symptoms closer to the full moon phase and less severe symptoms during a new moon phase. For me, when I started tracking this, I noticed that my Ulcerative Colitis symptoms were worse. If you are keeping a food journal, I suggest you notate the 2-3 days before and after a full moon to see if your symptoms worsened.

Treatment of a Protozoa Parasite

There are many different treatments available for Protozoa. I tend to lean toward a more natural or homeopathic approach to healing so I would recommend Hanna Kroeger’s Protozoa Kit. I have personally used this kit and within three days my symptoms started to improve. If your parasite is severe (as mine was), you may require two kits to fully rid your body of the protozoa. You can buy the kits online or find them at your local heath food / specialty store. For the best results, start the kit five days before the full moon phase.

There are additional homeopathic kits available for treatment of protozoa. I would recommend speaking with a homeopathic specialist or researching online for other successful homeopathic options.

Foods and Parasites

There are several types of foods that you should avoid when trying to rid your body of a parasite as well as several types of food that you should consume to aid in parasite removal. Below is a list of foods for each.

Foods to AVOID when trying to rid your body of a parasite:

  • Sugar

  • Alcohol

  • Potatoes

  • Peppers

  • Tomatoes

Foods to eat that may help to kill the parasite:

  • Garlic

  • Thyme

  • Pumpkin Seeds

  • Coconut and Coconut Oil

  • Pomegranates

  • Papaya

If you have a local health food store that also sells homeopathic medicines, they may have someone there you can speak with if you think you have a parasite. There is a also a lot of info on the web about parasites. Always do your research first before attempting to heal a problem that may or may not exist in your body.

If you haven't already read my post on Candida, I highly suggest it. Some of the symptoms of a parasite are similar to that of a candida overgrowth. Treating these underlying issues will get you on the road to healing your gut quickly. My hope is that bringing about awareness to these types of conditions will help at least one person feel better faster.
